Occupation – I am a Senior Account Executive for LifeWatch Services Inc. I sell cardiac arrhythmia monitoring devices to hospitals and physician groups.
Children – I have 3year old boy/girl twins, Gavin and Charlotte. They were only 2 ½ years old when I was diagnosed.
When were you diagnosed? I was diagnosed with stage IIa triple negative breast cancer in January 2015.
Treatment location? I was treated by the wonderful team at the Virginia Cancer Institute, Richmond Surgical, and Richmond Plastic Surgeons.
How was it found? I found the lump while in the shower just a few days before Christmas. I quickly sought guidance from my OB/GYN who referred me to an imaging center for a 3D mammogram and to a breast surgeon for an ultrasound. The 3D mammogram did not originally detect the lump. The ultrasound, however, did reveal an abnormality. Following a fine needle aspiration, the cancer was ultimately diagnosed by a core biopsy shortly after the new year.
Do you have a family history of breast cancer? I am a second generation breast cancer survivor. It has been over 20 years since my Mom survived breast cancer.
As a woman what gives you your strength?
My family cultivates my strength. My husband is my best friend, my rock and my biggest fan. He nursed me daily through a high risk twin pregnancy that kept me hospital ridden for two straight months. He loves endlessly and cares gently, and he works tirelessly in and out of the home. My children – they have the sweetest giggles, the softest kisses, and the biggest hugs. I often think about our precious daughter’s own fight. My husband and I witnessed her tiny yet strong 5 lb body survive bacterial meningitis and an ischemic stroke when she only 4 weeks old. Every day she and her brother amaze us.
Briefly state in your own words something about yourself that you want people to know.
I’ve been married to Rob since 2009. I am a full time working Mother of twins. I have many nicknames – Mai Tai, M-Lo, Sistah, Sweetie, Crash – but my favorite nickname of all is Mommy. I grew up as the only girl of four children. My three brothers didn’t offer much room for tiaras, glitter, or dancing. I had to run with the boys to keep up: forts, worms, wrestling, and BMX. That is likely why I have a little bit of daredevil in me. I’ve been skydiving, bungee jumping and white water rafting. I love to travel. The farthest destination to date is Tokyo (Konnichiwa!) and the most beautiful is the Na Pali Coast (Aloha!) in Kauai. But no place makes me happier than the salty, low country air in Charleston, SC (Hey ya’ll!). I lived there for two years. I am smitten as can be every time I go back. I really love a good bargain. I rarely pay full price for anything. I enjoy a good ‘ole tailgate. I don’t particularly have a favorite team but hand me a cold beer or a blood mary and I’ll cheer for yours. But since my husband will likely read this – Go Skins and Wahoowa! I have donated my locks on three separate occasions to cancer charities. I hope to one day donate a fourth time. I graduated with a bachelors from James Madison University. But my passion for learning has never stopped. I’m always learning a new craft. Some may say I’m trying to be a Jane of all trades.
